Located on a prominent urban corner, Grain + Light reimagines the modern two-family home as a quiet retreat within the city. Designed around the interplay of warm natural materials and daylight, the project balances openness, privacy, and high-performance living within a dense urban environment.
At the center of the home, a skylit stair acts as a vertical lightwell, drawing daylight deep into the interior and connecting the living spaces across floors. Warm wood slats create a soft architectural screen that filters light, defines circulation, and brings rhythm and texture to the open-concept interior.
Expansive bifold doors extend the kitchen and main living area onto a rear deck conceived as an urban oasis—a seamless continuation of the interior space that blurs the boundary between indoors and out.
The home’s high-performance wall assemblies and acoustic separation strategies were carefully designed to create a calm and energy-efficient environment while maintaining privacy between the primary residence and the garden-level rental unit. A restrained palette of warm woods, soft whites, blacks, and grays reinforces the project’s modern yet tranquil atmosphere.
The result is a light-filled urban home that prioritizes comfort, connection, and quiet living through thoughtful materiality and contemporary design.
